A Trip on the Marrakech to Casablanca Train
Taking the train is the best way to travel from Marrakech to Casablanca. In this article, I will show what the travel experience is like and how to book tickets.
By train from Marrakech to Casablanca
Marrakech, Morocco’s most popular tourist destination, and Casablanca, the country’s largest city and home to its biggest international airport, are connected by multiple trains each day.
With frequent departures, comfortable trains, and affordable prices, rail travel is clearly the preferred option over flying or taking a bus on this route.
None of the other options match the train in terms of comfort and speed – even flying takes longer once you factor in the time needed to reach both airports and complete check-in procedures.
How to book train tickets in Morocco
As the official website of ONCF – the Moroccan national railway company – is rather fiddly and cannot be accessed from most countries outside Morocco due to its strict firewall, it is best to buy your train ticket through a reliable online booking agency.
12Go is by far the best option for booking Moroccan tickets, and it also allows you to book trains between Marrakech and Casablanca.
Alternatively, you can buy tickets at the station on the day of departure.
However, you risk finding your preferred service fully booked, which is not uncommon during national holidays or the high tourist season.
I therefore advise booking your ticket online in advance through 12Go.
Note that tickets typically only go on sale 3 months before the departure of a train.

Different trains
There are two types of long-distance trains in Morocco:
- Al Boraq
- Al Atlas
Al Boraq is the brand name of Morocco’s high-speed train, similar to the TGV trains found in France.
These trains are comfortable and fast, offering both first and second class seating in open-plan saloon carriages.
First class seats are arranged in a 2+1 configuration, while second class seats use a 2+2 layout.
Al Boraq trains also feature a café-bar where you can buy drinks and snacks.
Slower but cheaper are the Al Atlas trains, Morocco’s InterCity service, which uses conventional locomotive-hauled carriages.
Both first and second class carriages typically have compartment-style seating, with six seats per compartment in first class and eight in second class.
Al Atlas trains usually have a trolley service offering drinks and snacks, although you can always bring your own drinks and food on board, if you wish.
When travelling from Marrakech to Casablanca, you currently only have the choice of Al Atlas train services, which typically take between 2 hours 40 minutes and 3 hours 30 minutes to complete the journey, depending on which departure you select.
In the near future, the Moroccan high-speed railway network will be extended to include Marrakech, which should then allow you to take an Al Boraq high-speed train on this route as well.
