How to Travel by Train From Rome to the Amalfi Coast
It is easy to travel to the Amalfi Coast by train from Rome, with plenty of options available depending on exactly where you want to go along this beautiful stretch of Italian coastline.
In general, the city of Salerno is considered the main entry point to the Amalfi Coast, although it can also be accessed by going via Naples and Sorrento.
Both Naples and Salerno are located on the main high-speed railway line running south from Rome, with dozens of departures available each day.
Use the search tool below from the reliable booking website Omio to compare prices and schedules from both the national Italian railway company Trenitalia and private operator Italo, and to book your ticket.
Option 1: Amalfi Coast via Salerno
Frequent high-speed and InterCity trains connect Rome with Salerno, a major port city just south of the Amalfi Coast.
From Salerno, you can continue to your destination on the Amalfi Coast by bus or ferry.
Buses from Salerno to the Amalfi Coast are operated by SITA and depart directly in front of Salerno railway station, running along the coastal road via Cetera, Maiori, and Minori to the town of Amalfi, where you can change buses to reach other destinations along the coast, such as Positano.
Train tickets are best booked online, while bus tickets (€2.80) can be purchased from a tobacconist or kiosk in or around the railway station.
Keep in mind that the bus can be very crowded in summer, so if you are travelling with a lot of luggage, taking a taxi or arranging a private transfer from Salerno may be a better option.
Alternatively, you can take a ferry (“traghetti”) from Salerno’s Concordia dock, also known as the Porto Turistico, to Amalfi or Positano.

Option 2: Amalfi Coast via Naples and Sorrento
Another way to reach the Amalfi Coast is via Naples and Sorrento.
On arrival at Napoli Centrale, follow the signs for the Circumvesuviana to reach the adjacent station of the Circumvesuviana Railway, which connects Naples with Sorrento, with trains departing every 30 minutes throughout most of the day.
From Sorrento, you can take a SITA bus to reach Positano, Praiano, and Amalfi, or go by taxi if you’re travelling with a lot of luggage.
It is best to book your train to Naples online in advance.
Tickets for the Circumvesuviana Railway from Naples to Sorrento can easily be bought on the spot, as these trains have a fixed price and tickets cannot sell out.
Simply buy your ticket from a ticket machine or booth, or tap in and out with a credit or debit card at the automatic entrance gates to the platform.
In Sorrento, tickets for the SITA bus can be bought from any tobacconist or kiosk.
