Trenitalia Train Staff to Strike on Thursday and Friday
Train staff of Italy’s national railway operator Trenitalia will hold a nationwide strike this coming Thursday and Friday.
Trenitalia strike
A national railway strike has been called by workers of Italy’s national railway operator Trenitalia.
The strike will begin on Thursday 4 September 2025 at 21:00 and continue until 18:00 on Friday 5 September.
It is not yet known what impact the nationwide Trenitalia strike will have, but passengers are advised to expect possible disruptions and cancellations.
There may also be knock-on effects, with services outside the strike hours potentially cancelled due to staff or trains being out of position.
In addition to Trenitalia, the strike will also affect other railway companies owned or partly owned by the FS Group (Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane), such as Tper and Trenord.
Services operated by the private high-speed company Italo and other private railway firms will not be affected by the strike.

Guaranteed services
Under Italian strike law, rail companies must ensure a minimum level of essential services during weekday rush hours, so a limited number of long-distance and regional trains will run normally on Friday morning.
More details about guaranteed services are available on the Trenitalia website.
If your train is cancelled and you choose not to travel, you can request a full refund from Trenitalia.
Regional strikes
Travellers in Italy should also be aware of potential strikes at local and regional transport companies.
In Rome, public transport could be halted during a four-hour strike on Thursday 4 September from 8:30 to 12:30.
This will affect buses, trolleybuses, trams, and metro services operated by ATAC in the Italian capital.
In Sicily, strikes are expected on Monday 8 September at several transport companies, including Autolinee Russo and Segesta Autolinee in Palermo, Interbus in Enna, and Etna Trasporti in Catania.
These strikes are likely to last for a full 24 hours.

Travellers should also be aware of planned strikes by local public transport companies in Rome and several Sicilian cities.
