“Free” InterRail Reservations in Italy and Spain
A new “Premium” InterRail pass has been introduced that includes the cost of the compulsory seat reservations on trains in Italy and Spain.
ITALY
In Italy this is on the High Speed Trains, for the train details click here – normal InterRail fee is €10 per train reservation fee. The regular Italian 3 day 2nd Class Adult InterRail costs €119 whereas the Premium Pass for 3 days costs €153. To make it worthwhile buying a Premium InterRail you will have to be travelling on at least 4 trains that require the €10 supplement. For full details of the Italian Passes click here.
SPAIN
The compulsory reservation trains in Spain are a little more complicated and vary depending on the train type, for a comprehensive list of Spanish supplements click here. The regular Spanish 3 day 2nd Class Adult InterRail costs €175 whereas the Premium Pass for 3 days costs €214. To make it worthwhile buying a Premium InterRail you will have to plan your trip and check the applicable supplements and do the maths! For full details of the Spanish Passes click here.
The Premium Passes can only be booked via InterRails own website and to get the free reservations, you must make them at least 3 business days in advance using the Interrail.eu Reservation Service. Trains that do not require a reservation are already automatically included in your pass.
An InterRail pass can only be used by European citizens and official residents. Non-European citizens can use a Eurail pass instead, available from Eurail.com. If you aren’t a European citizen, but you can prove that you live in Europe, you can use an InterRail pass.
