About the Milan to Rome high-speed train
Milan and Rome are linked by frequent high-speed trains, which can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour (190 mph) on this route.
There are two competing operators on the Milan to Rome route: the national operator Trenitalia and the private high-speed operator Italo.
Both offer comparable speeds and on-board comfort, so unless you have a strong preference for one of them, the average traveller is best off choosing the train with the most convenient departure time and price.
While Italo exclusively operates high-speed trains, Trenitalia runs both high-speed and conventional services.
Frecciarossa is the brand name for Trenitalia’s high-speed trains, but the company also operates conventional, locomotive-hauled InterCity trains, which are noticeably slower and less premium.
You can compare both Italo and Trenitalia train options in a single search through Omio and book your ticket via the platform.

Railway stations in Milan and Rome
Both Milan and Rome have multiple railway stations, so make sure you select the correct one when searching for your train.
Milano Centrale is Milan’s main and most impressive railway station, while Roma Termini is the main station in Rome.
However, some high-speed services use secondary stations in either city, such as Milano Porta Garibaldi or Roma Tiburtina.
Although many tourists find these stations less convenient, they can be a good option if your accommodation is nearby or if the train departure from there is significantly cheaper.
Railway stations in both Rome and Milan are well connected by public transport, including metro services in both cities, so getting to them should never be a big problem.
Other travel tips
Before booking your train, take the following travel tips into account:
- Tickets for high-speed and long-distance trains in Italy – whether you book with Trenitalia or Italo – vary according to demand. They are usually cheaper when booked in advance, with peak morning and early evening departures typically costing more than those in the middle of the day, and trains earl on Mondays and late on Fridays generally being more expensive than mid-day services on Wednesdays.
- High-speed train tickets always include an assigned seat. This means that these trains can sell out, so if you are travelling around national holidays such as Christmas or Easter, or during the busy summer season, it is advisable to book as far in advance as possible.
- Why not make a stopover along the way? The high-speed line from Milan to Rome passes through Bologna and Florence, both magnificent cities to visit. However, you would need to buy separate tickets if you want to stop over, meaning one ticket from Milan to Florence and another from Florence to Rome.
