Guide: Travelling by InterCity Train in Slovakia
The best way to travel around Slovakia is by taking an InterCity (IC) train operated by ZSSK, the Slovak national railway company.
This guide shows you what it is like to travel on a Slovak InterCity train, the onboard facilities available, and how to book tickets.
Slovak InterCity trains
InterCity services are the highest train category in Slovakia.
These premium trains link all the major cities along the country’s main west–east railway line, running from Bratislava via Žilina and Poprad to Košice.
They are also an excellent way to reach the Tatra Mountains.
Poprad-Tatry and Štrba, both located on the main west–east railway line, are important interchange stations where you can transfer to the narrow-gauge Tatra Electric Railway for onward travel into the mountains.
In the video below, you can see what it is like to travel on a Slovak InterCity train, which I took from Košice to Štrba on my way to the Tatras.
What are Slovak IC trains like
InterCity trains in Slovakia offer comfortable accommodation in both second and first class.
First class, with seats in either open-plan carriages in a 2+1 configuration or in carriages with six-seat side compartments, is the most spacious and comfortable option.
It is also generally quieter, as passenger numbers are usually lower.
Second class features either open-plan seating in a 2+2 configuration or in carriages with six-seat side compartments.
On around half of the InterCity services between Bratislava and Košice, there is also a dining car, where you can enjoy drinks, snacks, and full meals.

How to buy tickets
Tickets for ZSSK trains, whether it’s an InterCity service or a regional or local train, can easily be bought online on their website.
With fares being fixed, it is also perfectly fine to buy tickets on the day at the station, if you prefer.

Conclusion
It is always a pleasure to travel by train around Slovakia, with InterCity trains being the pick of the bunch for their high level of comfort.
Moreover, some InterCity trains on the main Bratislava–Poprad-Tatry–Košice route, also feature a dining car.
Slovak trains are also highly affordable, making this by far the best option for getting around the country.
