Paris to Barcelona by TGV High-Speed Train
You can travel from Paris to Barcelona on a direct TGV high-speed train, a fast, comfortable, and scenic way to get from France to Spain.
In this short guide, I will tell you everything you need to know about this train service and provide some booking tips.
Paris to Barcelona by train: the basics
There are up to three daily high-speed trains that run directly between Paris and Barcelona.
These are comfortable, modern high-speed TGV trains operated by SNCF, the French Railways.
Typically, there is at least one morning departure from Paris to Barcelona, as well as an afternoon service, the latter offering excellent connections with early morning Eurostar trains from London, Brussels, Amsterdam, or Cologne.

The route
The TGV high-speed train to Barcelona departs from Paris Gare de Lyon.
This station can be easily reached from anywhere across Paris, including all other railway termini in the French capital, by RER commuter train, metro, bus, or taxi.
After departure, the TGV train heads south on the high-speed railway line at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph).
The train typically stops at Nîmes, Montpellier, and Perpignan before crossing the Franco-Spanish border, after which it stops in Figueres in Girona before reaching its final destination, Barcelona Sants station.
It is a highly pleasant journey, with some scenic views over the Rhône Valley, the étangs (lakes) of southern France, the Mediterranean coast, and the Pyrenees in the distance.

Onboard facilities
The train service between Paris and Barcelona is operated by double-deck (duplex) TGV high-speed trains, offering both second and first class.
Second class has a 2+2 seating configuration, while first class has a more spacious 2+1 configuration with wider, more comfortable seats.
No matter which class you are travelling in, food and drinks are not included, so make sure you bring your own picnic or visit the café-bar coach on the TGV train to buy snacks or beverages.
The train has power sockets at all seats and offers a free-to-use Wi-Fi network.

Booking tickets
You can book tickets for the Paris to Barcelona high-speed train through the reliable booking website Omio.
This website is also excellent for all other train tickets you may need in France or Spain, as a single search shows not only the trains of the national operators SNCF (France) and Renfe (Spain) but also those of the private railway companies that compete with them.

Ticket prices are variable, much like airline fares, and are generally cheaper if booked in advance, when travelling on less busy days, and outside national holidays and the main summer season.
Using Interrail or Eurail on the Paris-Barcelona train
If you are travelling around Europe using a Eurail or Interrail pass, you can also take the Paris-Barcelona high-speed TGV train, but you need to make a special passholder reservation.
This passholder reservation currently costs €35 for both second and first class.
However, keep in mind that Eurail and Interrail passholder places on this TGV train are limited by a quota, so they can sell out even if the train is not full.
Make sure to book passholder fares as far ahead as possible if you are travelling during the high summer season.
