Japan Rail Pass Price Increase: Is It Still Worth Buying?
The Japan Rail Pass, popular among foreign tourists travelling around Japan, will increase in price in October.
Price increase of Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass, a nationwide rail pass offered by the Japan Railways Group (JR Group), will increase in price by 5 to 6 percent in October this year.
This rail pass is valid on Shinkansen high-speed trains, limited express services, as well as regional and commuter trains operated by JR across Japan.
According to the JR Group, this is the first price adjustment in three years and is necessary to reflect fare increases introduced by its member companies over the past couple of years.
However, the new increase pales in comparison to the previous fare revision of the Japan Rail Pass in October 2023, when prices rose by 70 percent.
For example, an adult seven-day pass for travel in ordinary train carriages (second class) will increase by 3,000 yen (£14/€16) to 53,000 yen, while the equivalent pass for the premium Green Car (first class) will rise by 4,000 yen (£19/€21).

Is a Japan Rail Pass still worth buying?
Although many tourists buy a Japan Rail Pass to cover their travel across the country, assuming it offers the best value for money, I do not think this is the case for most visitors.
I personally believe that the value proposition of the Japan Rail Pass is being eroded by the most recent price increases.
To get value from the pass, you need to undertake a big amount of long-distance train travel across Japan, which I do not think the average tourist will come close to doing.
Alternatives for the Japan Rail Pass
These days, it can often be much better value to simply book individual tickets rather than rely on the Japan Rail Pass.
This is especially true if you combine point-to-point train tickets with regional rail passes, which can still offer excellent value in Japan.

Conclusion
Japan is a fantastic country to explore by train, whether you travel on a Shinkansen bullet train or on a local service along a scenic regional railway line.
With the latest price increase, the Japan Rail Pass, which was not particularly good value to begin with, is becoming even more expensive.
This means that most tourists will actually be better off booking standard point-to-point tickets for their travels in Japan, perhaps in combination with a regional rail pass, which can still offer excellent value.
