5 or 6 years ago got as far as Gevgelija on the overnight sleeper from the old Belgrade station. Bus to Thessaloniki , train to Sofia (no more) then via Vidin to Craiova and Turnu Severin. That was a Sofia to Budapest sleeper - again no more.
