Bergen Airport to the City Centre on the Bybanen Light Rail
Bergen Airport in Norway has a great light rail connection to the city centre, called the Bybanen.
In this short guide, I’ll explain how to use this light rail connection and what the train journey is actually like.
Bergen Airport light rail
Bergen Flesland Airport (IATA code: BGO) is located around 16 kilometres (10 miles) from the city centre, and the light rail is the obvious way to get there by public transport.
Once you step from baggage reclaim into the arrivals hall at Bergen Airport, you will instantly notice the signs pointing you towards the light rail (Bybanen) station.
The station is located immediately outside the terminal building, one level down.

Buying tickets
Once you are down on the platform level of the light rail station, you will find machines where you can buy your ticket, with payment by card only.
A 60-minute ticket, which you will need for the journey from Bergen Airport to the city centre, costs 51 Norwegian kroner (£4.05, €4.72, $5.41).
Discounted tickets are available for seniors and children aged 6 to 17, while those under 6 travel for free.
Note that you won’t get a physical ticket, as your ticket will be virtual and linked to the card you used to buy it.

On the Bergen light rail
From Bergen Airport, there is a tram departure to the city centre every 10 minutes throughout most of the day.
The trams of the Bergen Light Rail travel at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour (43 mph) outside the city limits, where they have their own tracks, almost like trains.
However, once in the city, the tram tracks run on the actual road, and speeds are limited to 50 kilometres per hour (30 mph).
It takes the tram about 43 minutes to complete the journey between Bergen Airport and the city centre on the Bybanen light rail.
The airport is the first stop on this particular light rail line, so any tram you take will go to the city centre.
The final two stops before the terminus are Bergen bus station and Bergen railway station, while the last stop is Byparken, right in the heart of the city centre.
At Bergen railway station, you can connect to a train on the Bergensbanen, the highly scenic Bergen Railway Line that connects Bergen with Myrdal (for the equally scenic Flåm Railway) and Oslo.
